The professional work bench for book manufacturing
For specialized publishers who issue loose-leaf publications, the creation of supplements usually involves a great deal of effort. Changes mean that all relevant loose-leaf sets must be updated. Text additions or deletions of whole passages have an immediate effect on the layout. Page numbers change, line breaks are affected. In addition, content is published across media, i.e. as print, CD-ROM, and in intra- or extranets.
With SCHEMA ST4, publishers can efficiently implement the requirements connected with updating and supplementing extensive loose-leaf publications. The media-independent data format XML allows publication in various media.
In the XML-based editing and content management system, content and layout, including page breaks or other aspects of typesetting, are strictly separated. Once created, content is managed in a consistent data pool in the form of individual, versioned information units. The structure of the publication is stored separately. In the editing system, the publisher can see how information is linked and make changes in a structured manner.
Authors edit only the content, not the layout information, eliminating the need to redo formatting in the case of corrections. Process safety and further work-load reduction are ensured by consistency checks, cross-reference information in the metadata, and role-based permissions.

The XML pool forms the central data source for publication. When creating the publication, the system reads out the information units from the data pool with the help of the stored structure. XML data is automatically read into the selected layout. In this process, metadata such as page-break information is also transferred: The typesetter no longer has to rework much of the text manually, resulting in up to an 80% reduction in time and cost.
