Technical documentation has long been an integral part of a product and legally a part of the deliverable. It must be available at the same time as the product, and potentially in the language of the country of export. Legal requirements and specifications such as the EU Machinery Directive or US standards must also be taken into account. Processes for creating product information (user guides, installation, setup and operating manuals, etc.) are thus ever increasing in complexity.
The XML-based editing and content management solutions from SCHEMA offer effective support for this: from writing easily translatable text or creating warnings that conform to norms, to cross-media publishing. Standard interfaces to related systems make possible partly or fully automated processes, so that a shorter time to market is achievable.
Working with information modules
SCHEMA ST4 is based on the concept of content and layout separation. Technical documentation is divided into individual information units that mirror the modular structure of a product. These units are stored in media-independent XML and can then be published in various target formats.
Translate efficiently
So-called translation filters identify only those information modules needing localization, leaving the remaining text untouched. Standard interfaces with translation management systems support automated processes and authors writing content for translation.
Reliable and compliant documentation
Images and text in compliance with the US standard ANSI Z535.6 are preconfigured in SCHEMA ST4, as are representations of recommended structures such as DITA, Funktionsdesign and mumasy. In addition, system-based correction and release workflows, as well as automatic data updating, ensure comprehensive process safety.
Automated processes
The automatic generation of various formats (PDF, Microsoft Word, or Adobe FrameMaker, etc.) is part of the standard functionality. With the 
Documentation Production Center (DPC), a partner solution from SEAL Systems, creation of product documentation can be triggered centrally from the ERP system (SAP). The connection to AntennaHouse XSL Formatter, Adobe InDesign, or the Layoutomizer from Flyer-Ex allows for automated layout generation.
With the use of SCHEMA ST4 as an allround tool for the technical editor, effort and costs for documentation creation are significantly reduced.
